Where to Begin
Here's a quick guide to getting started in
ten_fwd:
[ Arrival ]
You have one of two main choices in how your character arrives on the ship. Either they are part of the universe and board willingly, or they are pulled aboard by the game's antagonist, Q. The Enterprise will dock at planets, outposts, and space stations where new passengers can be picked up. We also allow characters to board with small personal vehicles, which will then be kept in one of the ship's shuttlebays. If your character is not part of the universe and is being pulled aboard unwillingly, they were likely just going about their daily life when suddenly they found themselves winked away in a flash of light, and reappeared on board the USS Enterprise-D in the year 2367.
[ IC Intros ]
We ask that all new characters make their IC intro within two weeks of joining the game. This can be done one of two ways: either you can make an entry post in
ten_fwd with your character appearing on the ship, or you can tag into someone else's post establishing your character's arrival. Make sure you use your character's game tag when you do this. The standard arrival set-up is to be winked (something like this) into the Ten Forward lounge, but your character can appear anywhere that's not a restricted area (see below). If they need an immediate Sickbay visit, you can plot this out with the medical muns when you do your OOC intro.
[ OOC Intros ]
The mods post a monthly Welcome Post | Meet and Greet in
ten_fwd_ooc once all apps have been processed. In this post, all players (old and new) have a space to introduce themselves and who they play. Your mods will also introduce themselves here. If you prefer, you can also make a standard OOC Intro post directly in
ten_fwd_ooc to introduce yourself, and we'll come to you. Or you can use both!
[ I'm where? Why? ]
Your character should be able to find someone who will explain what's going on: serial interferer Q has been bringing visitors from across time, space, and the multiverse aboard the Enterprise. As one would expect, the Enterprise crew were surprised by this development. Your character will probably find plenty of other player characters (PCs) to help them out if they need it, but you are also allowed use of non-player characters (NPCs) to answer basic questions or provide small services (such as: give your character directions, explain how a piece of technology works, deliver food and drink, and so on). This can happen in threads or off-screen (known as handwaving).
[ Wait, this is a bar? ]
One of the major settings of the game is Ten Forward, the social hub of the Enterprise. The bartender does keep a stock of real alcohol behind the bar, but everything will be synthehol by default. Synthehol is a variant of alcohol designed to taste similar but have no negative side effects (you can read more here). There are a wide variety of other places on the ship including a gym, arboretum, stores, day spa, schools, and so forth, all of which will be accessible once your character clears quarantine. No money is required to get food, drink, clothing, or other basic necessities while you are aboard the ship.
[ Quarantines ]
The crew have put in place procedures to deal with their unexpected visitors. Your character will be treated as a guest, and so long as they don't offer Security any violence they won't be confined or imprisoned. However, upon first arrival all guests are placed in quarantine that limits their movements on the ship to Ten Forward and the temporary guest quarters on Deck 7 (which includes the corridors and turbolifts between the two), until they undergo a Sickbay check-up. This is to ensure guest safety, and will last no more than a few in-game days assuming your character is in good health.
[ Sickbay check-ups ]
New characters are kept under loose quarantine until they can visit Sickbay to get checked out by the staff there. Sick or not, the crew want to make sure every character won't bring any illnesses from parallel universes or different times onto the ship, so all characters will receive a basic round of antibiotics. They'll also be vaccinated against known diseases as of 2367. Each month, the mods post a party-style Sickbay log in
ten_fwd the first Friday after apps are processed. While your character is required to visit Sickbay, you don't have to thread it out if you don't want to. You're welcome to handwave your character through the check-up. There will be a team of doctors on standby, usually announced in the post. If you are tagging in, specify the name of the doctor you want in the subject line of your tag, and they'll tag you as soon as they're available. If you don't mind which doctor sees your character, just write 'OTA' in the subject line.
[ Counseling ]
Characters will also be advised that a counseling service is available on board the Enterprise. This is entirely optional, but if you want to seek counseling, it can be threaded or handwaved. Counseling is open every month to new and established characters alike. A party-style log will go up in
ten_fwd on the Wednesday after the Sickbay log (usually the second Wednesday after apps are processed). Characters will be able to tag in to thread with a counselor.
[ First Arrival, during quarantine ]
Under quarantine, your character can go to their temporary quarters, Ten Forward Lounge, and the corridors and turbolifts between them. All corridors have computer access panels, and the turbolifts use voice-activated access to the computer as well. Soon after arriving, your character will be shown to Sickbay where they will be cleared from quarantine.
[ After quarantine ]
After the Sickbay check-up, quarantine is lifted. That means your character has access to all civilian levels of the ship (check out our maps page for more details). Restricted areas are meant for crew only, and any non-Starfleet character that moves into one of these areas will be removed (see below).
[ Restricted Areas ]
Restricted areas are those where ship operations are carried out by the crew. Unless your character is crew or has an IC reason (such as a job, an appointment, or otherwise received permission from a mod), they are not allowed on the bridge, command centers, transporter rooms, or engineering sections. Shuttlebay and lab access is based on need only.
[ Rules for Conduct ]
When your character is assigned quarters, the ship's Chief of Security will provide them with a few IC Rules for Conduct. These will be given orally as well as placed on a PADD for your character to refer to. Mod clearance must be obtained to bend any of these rules, such as for a temporary plot. The rules are as follows:
[ Rooms ]
Once your character has been cleared from quarantine, they will be assigned more permanent living quarters than the temporary ones they receive when they first arrive. They will share these quarters with at least one other character, unless a special request is submitted. Most guest quarters are on Deck 7, 8 and 9, with VIP quarters on Decks 8 and 9. All personal rooms may be customized to your character's tastes within reason. A list of our most current rooming assignments is here. For a detailed description of the Enterprise's standard quarters, go here.
[ How are rooms allocated? ]
By default, characters are assigned a room and roommate by random draw. If you have a special request or special circumstances, simply comment here to let the mods know. Each month, shortly after all apps are processed, the mods post an OOC list to
ten_fwd_ooc of characters getting roommate assignments. An IC Roommate Mixer goes up in
ten_fwd the first Sunday after apps are processed (a few days after the Sickbay post), so all characters can meet and mingle. Once this happens, all new rooming assignments get added to our official list.
[ Personal Possessions ]
Characters are allowed to carry their personal possessions on them unless they pose a danger to other characters on board. It's encouraged that weapons stay in a character's room, unless they abide by basic Comic Con rules - that is, they must remain holstered at all times and be in plain view. If a character's weapon is deemed as much too dangerous, or if they use it while on the ship, Security may remove it from your character and keep it in a locked weapons room. Small pets should be kept in a character's room any time they are not accompanied by their owner; large pets should be kept in their assigned place in the cargo hold when they are not accompanied by their owner. Each room in a guest's quarters has a storage locker for important personal items.
[ Money ]
The Enterprise's crew are treating all who are whisked aboard by Q as guests, and are providing for them. Money doesn't have the central role in the lives of Federation citizens that it does for us or in many canons. For more details, see the Memory Alpha article on money. When characters visit planets or stations where money is required to barter, instructions will be provided by the mods on how to proceed. Most Federation worlds won't require money.
